ABOUT THE WORKSHOP
Over the last 22 years, the Annual Workshop on Automorphic Forms and Related Topics has remained a small and friendly conference. Those attending range from students to new PhD's to well established researchers. For young researchers, the conference has provided support and encouragement; for accomplished researchers, it has provided the opportunity to mentor as well as a forum for exchanging ideas.
The workshop has become internationally recognized for both its high-quality research talks and its supportive atmosphere for junior researchers. Participants present cutting-edge research in all areas related to automorphic forms. These include Maass wave forms, elliptic curves, Siegel and Jacobi modular forms, special values of L-functions, random matrices, quadratic forms, applications of modular forms, and many other topics.
In addition to research talks, last year's workshop featured a panel
discussion on how to
start and maintain mathematical collaboration, and another one on the future of research in automorphic forms.
Based on the success of these sessions, we plan to have panel
discussion sessions this year as well. Our topics will be (1) how to choose the appropriate journal for a paper you've written, and (2) how do you find prolems for your graduate/undergraduate students?
GENERAL INFORMATION
The registration fee will be US$40. This money will be used to buy snacks, like fresh bagels, schmears, fresh fruit, juice, coffee and tea (and milk and half-n-half) at breakfast time. There will be lighter snacks, as well as coffee and tea throughout the day. In addition, your registration fee pays for your very own conference coffee mug (out of which you must drink the available liquids), and the conference party. Each participant is strongly encouraged to give a talk (typically, 20, 30 or 40 minutes in length---mostly your choice).
WHAT YOU SHOULD DO NOW
If you think you will be attending this workshop, you should contact the organizers to inform them that you expect to attend afw2009@gmail.com. Please include the following information:
Name, address, affiliation
Title, abstract, and desired length of talk (20, 30, or 40
minutes)
Estimated lodging and airfare cost (if applying for funding)
We'll try to accommodate your request for the length of the talk as
much as we can.

Conference Funding
We have been awarded a small amount of funding from Bucknell University and from the Number Theory Foundation. Priority will go to
graduate students, recent Ph.D.'s, and those without other sources of support. Please let us know if you will need funding.
Accommodations
Bucknell University will be hosting the PIAA state swimming championships at the same time as our conference. Due to the strain on hotels in the area, we have booked a block of rooms at a reduced rate in Danville, a neighboring town to Lewisburg. The rooms will be released to the public on February 9 (which is the first day you can make reservations at the Lewisburg Hotel, see below). Please email us if you need transportation from Danville to Bucknell University during the conference.
Pine Barn Inn
Conference Rate: $69-$79 per night (includes wireless)
*All rooms are non-smoking
Rooms blocked as `` Automorphic Forms Workshop''
If you wish to stay closer to the conference, you may be able to book rooms at the other accommodations closer to the conference; we expect some schools to cancel their hotel reservations once the teams know more about their qualification status.
You can find the Olin Science Building (marked by a big star) on this campus map. Note the parking lots around the building. You're encouraged to park behind Dana Engineering. Parking passes will be available.
Nearby airports are in Harrisburg and Williamsport. Both are small (Williamsport is very small) and mostly accept domestic flights. International attendees may consider flying into New York city and taking a bus or renting a car.
The following directions are taken from Bucknell University's travel page and google maps. We recommend checking your directions and exit numbers for the return trip, particularly if you are going to Harrisburg.
There are also small airports in State College and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre; they are both 1.5 hours from Lewisburg and often more expensive, but occasionally cheaper than Harrisburg.
Be advised that US Airways is petitioning the FAA to stop service at Williamsport Airport. As they are the only carrier, it is not clear that they will be allowed to do this, at least not before another Airline offers service.
We recommend Harrisburg, Baltimore, or Newark, if possible.
By Plane
Williamsport Airport (IPT) (About 40 minutes)
Note: This is a very small airport. You will need to connect through Philadelphia on US Airways to use this airport. The Williamsport connection is in terminal F. You will want to take the bust from terminal A or terminals B/C to avoid going through security again. The website is http://flyipt.com/.
Exit the airport onto Loyalsock Ave. South.
In 1.5 miles turn left onto the ramp for I-180 E/US-220 N.
This will turn into PA-147 S as you pass under Rt. 80 after about 21 miles.
After another 6 miles take the PA-45 exit toward Lewisburg/Montandon and turn right onto PA-45.
Follow 45 through Milton. You will cross over a bridge into downtown Lewisburg. The traffic light for Rt. 15 is the first major traffic light (there are a few in town).
Harrisburg (MDT) (About 1 hour 15 minutes)
Note: This is a larger airport than Williamsport, though nowhere near the size of the others listed. The website is http://www.flyhia.com/ . The first few miles of the drive are through Harrisburg and a little congested, but the majority of the drive is quite pleasant. As you drive Rt 15 North, do not be concerned by the signs saying 'Rt 15 South', as these are pointing towards places to make U turns.
Head east Take the ramp to I-81/I-83/Hershey/Lancaster/PA 230/Harrisburg/York/I-283/Pennsylvania Turnpike
Merge onto Airport Conn. Follow this about 2 miles.
Take the exit onto PA-283 W for about 1.5 miles.
Merge onto PA 283 North. Stay on this for about 3.5 miles.
Continue on I-83 N/US-322 W for 3 miles.
Take exit 51A to merge onto I-81 S/US-322 W toward Carlisle/Lewistown for 2.5 miles.
Take the exit for Route 322 West towards State College/Lewistown. Stay on 322 for 13 miles. This will take you across the Susquehanna River. (If you miss this exit you can continue to directly the exit for Route 11/15, which will be a little slower.)
Take the exit for routes 11&15 North towards Selinsgrove. This will be an expressway for about 33 miles, and then take you onto Business routes 11/15 at Selinsgrove.
About 5 miles later routes 11 & 15 split near Kmart and Skeeter's BBQ. Stay on Route 15. Lewisburg is about 7 miles later. You will pass Bucknell University (traffic light at Moore Ave.) just before the intersection of 15 and 45 (Purple Heart Highway).
Philadelphia Airport (PHL) (About 3 hours)
Exit the Airport via 95 SOUTH (95 N will take you into NJ)
After about 5 miles take exit 7 for I-476 N towards Plymouth meeting. This is also called the Pennsylvania Turnpike Northeast Extension. It is a partial toll road.
After 95 miles take exit 95 for I-80/PA-940 E and follow Route 80 West for 66 miles.
At exit 210A take Rt. 15 South towards Lewisburg. (Williamsport is north.)
Lewisburg is 7 miles south. Look for the intersection of 15 and 45 (Purple Heart Highway). You will pass Bucknell University on your left shortly after this.
Baltimore (BWI) (About 3 hours)
Take I-195 W (signs for I-195 W/Airport exit) to exit 4A. Merge onto I-95 N toward I-695/Baltimore.
After 2 miles take exit 49B on the left to merge onto Baltimore Beltway Inner Loop/I-695 N toward I-70/Towson/I-83.
After 17 miles take exit 24 to merge onto I-83 N toward Timonium/York PA. This will take you into Pennsylvania.
Stay on this for about 65 miles, then take the exit onto I-83 N toward Harrisburg for about 9 miles.
Take exit 51A to merge onto I-81 S/US-322 W toward Carlisle/Lewistown for about 2.5 miles.
Note: This way will keep you on 11/15 most of the way. It is a little longer than suggested by google maps as 11/15 is two lane at points, but it is also less complicated through Harrisburg, which is often congested.
Take the VA-267-TOLL W exit toward Leesburg (Partial toll road, but not when you're coming from Dulles)
After about 1.7 miles merge onto Dulles Greenway/VA-267 W (Toll road)
12 miles later take exit 1B for US-15 N/VA-7 E toward Frederick MD and merge onto Leesburg Bypass/US-15-BYP N/VA-7 E. Continue to follow Leesburg Bypass/US-15-BYP N for 3.4 miles.
There is a slight right at James Monroe Hwy/US-15 N. Continue to follow US-15 N, which will take you into Maryland.
Take the ramp onto US-15 N/US-340 E
Take exit 12B to merge onto US-15 N toward Gettysburg, which will take you into Pennsylvania.
After about 70 miles, when you are in the Harrisburg area, you will make a left turn on Front street to stay on 11/15.
This will be a two lane highway at points, before turning into and expressway, and then will take you onto Business routes 11/15 at Selinsgrove.
