23rd Annual Workshop on Automorphic Forms and Related Topics

Bucknell University
Lewisburg, Pennsylvania
Department of Mathematics
March 10-13, 2009

ORGANIZERS

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP

Over the last 22 years, the Annual Workshop on Automorphic Forms and Related Topics has remained a small and friendly conference. Those attending range from students to new PhD's to well established researchers. For young researchers, the conference has provided support and encouragement; for accomplished researchers, it has provided the opportunity to mentor as well as a forum for exchanging ideas.

The workshop has become internationally recognized for both its high-quality research talks and its supportive atmosphere for junior researchers. Participants present cutting-edge research in all areas related to automorphic forms. These include Maass wave forms, elliptic curves, Siegel and Jacobi modular forms, special values of L-functions, random matrices, quadratic forms, applications of modular forms, and many other topics.

In addition to research talks, last year's workshop featured a panel discussion on how to start and maintain mathematical collaboration, and another one on the future of research in automorphic forms. Based on the success of these sessions, we plan to have panel discussion sessions this year as well. Our topics will be (1) how to choose the appropriate journal for a paper you've written, and (2) how do you find prolems for your graduate/undergraduate students?

GENERAL INFORMATION

The registration fee will be US$40. This money will be used to buy snacks, like fresh bagels, schmears, fresh fruit, juice, coffee and tea (and milk and half-n-half) at breakfast time. There will be lighter snacks, as well as coffee and tea throughout the day. In addition, your registration fee pays for your very own conference coffee mug (out of which you must drink the available liquids), and the conference party. Each participant is strongly encouraged to give a talk (typically, 20, 30 or 40 minutes in length---mostly your choice).

WHAT YOU SHOULD DO NOW

If you think you will be attending this workshop, you should contact the organizers to inform them that you expect to attend afw2009@gmail.com. Please include the following information: We'll try to accommodate your request for the length of the talk as much as we can.

This year's picture is one of the many beautiful ones created Tom Boothby. It is the modular form associated to the elliptic curve 450a (using Cremona's notation) mapped onto the hyperbolic disc. The picture was created using Sage.

Conference Schedule

The workshop begins the morning of Tuesday, March 10th and goes through the late afternoon of Friday, March 13th.

Conference Funding

We have been awarded a small amount of funding from Bucknell University and from the Number Theory Foundation. Priority will go to graduate students, recent Ph.D.'s, and those without other sources of support. Please let us know if you will need funding.

Accommodations

Bucknell University will be hosting the PIAA state swimming championships at the same time as our conference. Due to the strain on hotels in the area, we have booked a block of rooms at a reduced rate in Danville, a neighboring town to Lewisburg. The rooms will be released to the public on February 9 (which is the first day you can make reservations at the Lewisburg Hotel, see below). Please email us if you need transportation from Danville to Bucknell University during the conference.

Pine Barn Inn
Conference Rate: $69-$79 per night (includes wireless)
*All rooms are non-smoking
Rooms blocked as `` Automorphic Forms Workshop''

If you wish to stay closer to the conference, you may be able to book rooms at the other accommodations closer to the conference; we expect some schools to cancel their hotel reservations once the teams know more about their qualification status.

  • Travel Information

You can find the Olin Science Building (marked by a big star) on this campus map. Note the parking lots around the building. You're encouraged to park behind Dana Engineering. Parking passes will be available.

Nearby airports are in Harrisburg and Williamsport. Both are small (Williamsport is very small) and mostly accept domestic flights. International attendees may consider flying into New York city and taking a bus or renting a car.

The following directions are taken from Bucknell University's travel page and google maps. We recommend checking your directions and exit numbers for the return trip, particularly if you are going to Harrisburg.

There are also small airports in State College and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre; they are both 1.5 hours from Lewisburg and often more expensive, but occasionally cheaper than Harrisburg.

Be advised that US Airways is petitioning the FAA to stop service at Williamsport Airport. As they are the only carrier, it is not clear that they will be allowed to do this, at least not before another Airline offers service.

We recommend Harrisburg, Baltimore, or Newark, if possible.

    By Plane

Williamsport Airport (IPT) (About 40 minutes)

Note: This is a very small airport. You will need to connect through Philadelphia on US Airways to use this airport. The Williamsport connection is in terminal F. You will want to take the bust from terminal A or terminals B/C to avoid going through security again. The website is http://flyipt.com/.

Harrisburg (MDT) (About 1 hour 15 minutes)

Note: This is a larger airport than Williamsport, though nowhere near the size of the others listed. The website is http://www.flyhia.com/ . The first few miles of the drive are through Harrisburg and a little congested, but the majority of the drive is quite pleasant. As you drive Rt 15 North, do not be concerned by the signs saying 'Rt 15 South', as these are pointing towards places to make U turns.

Head east Take the ramp to I-81/I-83/Hershey/Lancaster/PA 230/Harrisburg/York/I-283/Pennsylvania Turnpike

Philadelphia Airport (PHL) (About 3 hours)

    Baltimore (BWI) (About 3 hours)

Washington, D.C.: Dulles Airport (IAD) (About 3.5 hours)

Note: This way will keep you on 11/15 most of the way. It is a little longer than suggested by google maps as 11/15 is two lane at points, but it is also less complicated through Harrisburg, which is often congested.

New York City (About 3.5 hours for JFK, LaGaurdia. About 3 hours for Newark)

    JFK Airport (JFK):

    LaGuardia (LGA):

    Newark (EWR):

Note: In our opinion, this is the most convenient airport for international travelers.

    By Bus

There is limited bus service to Lewisburg. The Susquehanna Trailways bus lines serves the area. The bus stop is on Market Street near 5th street, about three blocks from campus.

    Susquehanna Trailways: 1-800-692-6314

Local Bus Ticket Vendor (Market Street Deli): 570-524-7776

    http://www.susquehannabus.com/

The bus will run from New York to Lewisburg and from Williamsport to Lewisburg, though neither stops are at the airports. Buses do not run often. We strongly advise you to call Susquehanna Trailways and confirm that the bus will indeed run BEFORE booking your plane tickets.

    Limousine Service

Susquehanna Valley Limousine Service offers transportation between Lewisburg and all of the airports listed. Individual rates are not cheap, but this may be less expensive than a rental car if you have multiple travelers.
